The SaaS AI Pricing Squeeze: How Tools Started Charging Extra for AI — 2026

The free-AI honeymoon is ending. Through 2025–2026, SaaS tools quietly moved AI behind credits, higher tiers and usage-based billing — an "AI tax" on software you already pay for. This tracks who changed what, and when.

When generative AI features launched, many were bundled in. In 2026 the model is shifting: AI is increasingly metered (credits), gated to a higher plan, or moved to usage-based billing. For buyers, the headline subscription no longer covers the AI you may have started relying on. This page compiles the dated changes.

How AI got re-priced (2025–2026)

NotionSeparate Notion AI add-on removed (May 2025)Full AI now requires the Business plan (bundled up-tier)
GitHub CopilotAll plans transition to usage-based billing (GitHub AI Credits) on Jun 1, 2026Usage-based (credits)

Where AI is still bundled (for now)

DialpadAI transcription + call summaries on all tiers, including Standard
PipedriveAI Sales Assistant included on all paid tiers
FreshsalesFreddy AI expanded 2026 (generative email, auto-enrichment) within tiers
BitdefenderPhoton AI scanning included (security, not a chargeable add-on)

Key findings

  1. 2026 is the year AI moved from "bundled" to "metered." GitHub Copilot (usage-based from Jun 1, 2026), monday.com (AI credits alongside seats from May 6, 2026) and ClickUp (Brain ~$9/user/mo) all shifted AI to a paid, metered model. The free-AI land-grab is converting into a revenue line.
  2. "Free until" dates are the new fine print. Looker's Gemini tokens are free within fair use only until Sep 30, 2026, then usage-based (~$3/1M input). When you adopt an AI feature, check whether the current price is permanent or a promotional window.
  3. Credit pools cap what looks unlimited. Canva's "500 monthly AI credits" and Webflow's credit pools mean the AI is included but rationed — heavy users hit a wall and pay more. "AI included" rarely means "AI unlimited."
  4. Up-tiering is the quiet version of the AI tax. Notion removed its AI add-on and folded full AI into Business; Zoho gates Zia to Enterprise. You don't see a new line item — you just need a more expensive plan to keep the AI you used.
  5. A few tools still bundle AI as a differentiator. Dialpad (AI on all tiers incl. Standard) and Pipedrive (AI Sales Assistant on all paid tiers) use included AI as a competitive wedge. That's increasingly the exception, and worth rewarding if AI is core to your use.

Methodology

Dated AI-pricing changes were compiled from our sourced 2026 category studies (productivity, CRM, BI, design, no-code, dev tools). "Metered" means billed by credits/usage; "gated" means moved to a higher tier; "bundled" means included within the plan. Figures and dates are as published at compile time; some (e.g. "free until Sep 30, 2026") are explicit vendor windows. This is a pricing-trend snapshot, not a feature ranking.

Editorial note (verification): AI pricing and "free until" dates change frequently. Confirm the current model (bundled / credits / usage-based / tier-gated) and any promotional end date on the vendor's pricing page before relying on this. Compiled 2026-06-27.
